3. GRAMMAR - Future Perfect


You already learnt the simple future forms in básico 2, please, review them in case you need it:

FUTURE PERFECT: WILL (WON'T) + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE

It shows an action that will end at (or before) a point in the future.

· Talks about a "past in the future".
· We often use by with the future perfect (to mean at or before), e.g. by this afternoon, by the time we get there, by the time you've finished, by the end of the year, by then.

The form is:
will (won't)
+ have
+ past participle
· to say that something will end at (or before) a particular point in the future.
Can I call you back around 4.00? I'll have finished looking through the contract by then.



· to say what we think has almost certainly happed by now.
They'll have left by now. (I'm 99% sure they have left)





should (shouldn't)
+ have
+ past participle
· to show that we think something will happen before a certain point in the future (but are not 100% sure).
I should've finished by about six or so.


Other examples:

You will have perfected your English by the time you come back from the U.S.
-
You will not (won't) have perfected your English by the time you come back from the U.S.
?
Will you have perfected your English by the time you come back from the U.S.?

By tomorrow I will have finished my book. (Para mañana, habré terminado este libro.)
Before winter, you will have sold your old car. (Antes del invierno, habrás vendido tu antiguo automóvil.)
Before we arrive home, Mom will have prepared our breakfast. (Antes de que lleguemos a casa, mamá habrá preparado nuestro desayuno.)
We will not have finished these reports by 7 pm!! (¡¡No habremos finalizado estos informes para las 7 de la tarde!!)

· I will have finished my English homework by the time my mother arrives.
· Will you have finished your English homework by the time your mother arrives?
· By the end of this weekend, I will have revised my lessons.
· By the time her husband arrives home, she will have prepared dinner.
· I won't have finished this task by the end of June


The Future Perfect shows that something will occur before:
  1. another action occurs in the future
  2. or before a specific time in the future.

QUESTION TAGS: AUXILIARY + PRONOUN

· for agreement
The speaker wasn't exactly helping either, was he?

· for confirmation of an idea
They have music later on down there, don't they?

· in polite request
You couldn't pass me the salt, could you?
positive tags are often used to make polite requests

polite way to make suggestions

makes commands more polite
